Electives

At EPS, our students have a say in the things they learn.

The Year 5/6 Electives are an initiative designed to increase student engagement with school.  Increasing student voice and agency is an evidence-based strategy that promotes student motivation, stimulated learning and connection to school.

Electives are an opportunity for students to drive their own learning in a curriculum area of their choice. Students are exposed to a broad range of interests and opportunities that may not be covered in detail within other classes.

Electives are held in Terms 1 and 4 for a two-hour session per week.

Elective subjects are chosen based on student interests, as long as they fall within the scope for the Victorian Curriculum. Tools such as student surveys, forums and a preference system are used to enable the process and help make Electives equitable, inclusive and accessible, with students receiving elective subjects preferred wherever possible.

A key feature of the elective program is the school’s purpose-built Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden, which is one of our most popular offerings.

Electives foster a positive learning environment, helping students develop skills, explore interests, and discover their passions. They can also help students build community and prepare for leadership opportunities and secondary school environments.
