Cultural Respect & Inclusion

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we come together as one school community each day to learn and care for each other, our school, this land, water and sky.
The Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation have used this land for learning for generations, and we pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Our Commitment to Cultural Inclusion

At Eltham Primary School, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and culturally rich learning environment that acknowledges, respects, and celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We believe that understanding and valuing First Nations perspectives enriches the educational experience for all students and strengthens our school community.

How We Embed Indigenous Perspectives in Learning

Authentic Curriculum Integration: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and perspectives are embedded across subject areas, from Humanities and the Arts to Science, Mathematics and English.

  • Community Partnerships: We collaborate with local Elders and Indigenous organisations to provide firsthand cultural knowledge and experiences.
  • Inclusive Events & Celebrations: We actively participate in National Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week, and other cultural events that highlight First Nations perspectives.
  • Language and Storytelling: We incorporate Indigenous languages, Dreaming stories, and oral traditions into our teaching to provide students with deeper cultural connections.
  • Professional Learning for Staff: Our educators participate in continuous professional development to ensure culturally responsive and culturally safe teaching practices.

A School That Welcomes Many Cultures

Eltham Primary School embraces the vision of the Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan and celebrates the culture, knowledge and experiences of First Nations Peoples.

We are equally committed to the diversity that strengthens our community. We welcome and include the rich diversity of beliefs, cultures, abilities, identities and family make-ups that are part of our school community. We value and appreciate the contributions that everyone makes to Eltham Primary School and commit to being inclusive and fair-minded every day.

We celebrate and embrace the backgrounds, languages, and traditions of all students and families. Our inclusive approach ensures that every student feels valued and empowered to express their cultural identity. Through cross-cultural learning experiences, we foster respect, empathy, and global citizenship among our students.

Join Us in Building an Inclusive Future

Our staff are provided with professional learning and development opportunities that allows them to understand and support neurodivergent students and families. We have a Disability Inclusion Leader who assists our staff and families in accessing the right support through:

  • a tiered funding model
  • a new Disability Inclusion Profile to determine student needs, and
  • initiatives to help build knowledge and skills in inclusive education.

We invite families, students, and the wider community to be part of our journey in promoting cultural diversity and inclusion. Whether through curriculum, events, or community engagement, we strive to create an environment where all cultures, peoples and abilities are respected and celebrated.
